As Cape Byron was a major headland with deep water at its foundation, it had been regarded as being very easily visible to passing mariners and a lighthouse wasn't originally regarded as necessary. Having said that, with the 1890s, as Cape Byron was essentially the most northern area for a lighthouse in NSW, a station was promoted as remaining one
